Very high doses of vitamin B could cause lung cancer in men

This is what a US study suggests, which also indicates that the risk would be even greater in the case of smokers. New research suggests that long-term supplementation with high doses of vitamins B6 and B12, promoted by the vitamin industry to increase energy and improve metabolism, is associated with a lung cancer risk two to four times higher in men in relation to non-users of complexes with these vitamins.

The risk increased even more in male smokers who took more than 20 mg of B6 or 55 micrograms of B12 per day for ten years. Male smokers who took B12 at these doses were about four times more likely to develop the disease compared to non-users.

Epidemiologists at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Ohio State University, Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and the Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James), the Fred Cancer Research Center Hutchinson, all of them in the United States, and the National Taiwan University report their findings in an article published in this Tuesday's issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

According to the Best Oncologist in Delhi NCR, this is the first prospective observational study that analyzes the effects of prolonged long-term use of B6 / B12 supplements and the risk of lung cancer. In general, it has been believed that these supplements reduce the risk of cancer.

For this study, Theodore Brasky, from OSUCCC-James, and colleagues analyzed data from more than 77,000 patients participating in the VITamins and Lifestyle cohort study (VITAL), a long-term prospective observational study designed to evaluate vitamin supplements and other minerals in relation to cancer risk.

When enrolling in the study, they informed researchers about the use of vitamin B in the last ten years, including information on the dose, a critical detail but often lacking when assessing the risk and investigating the association. One can seek treatment for lung cancer in Noida.

“Our data has shown that intake of high doses of B6 and B12 for a long time period can contribute to deadly diseases like Lung cancer and the incidence of these increase amongst the male smokers who are definitely worthy of concern for further evaluation.”  Brasky says pointing out that these findings are about doses that are much higher than taking a multivitamin every day for ten years.

For this new analysis, the Best Oncologist in Delhi NCR used statistical techniques to adjust factors. Pointing out that these findings are about doses that are much higher than taking a multivitamin every day for ten years.
